Free singles events in NYC: what’s actually free, and what to expect

By Nomi Ali Tariq, Founder ·

Are there free singles events in NYC?

Yes — more than most people think. The reliably free options in New York are weekly run clubs, NYC Parks and public-library events, free or pay-what-you-wish museum hours, and singles nights run by apps for their own members. The catch is that “free” on a listing doesn’t always mean free at the door, so here’s what each option really costs and how to tell.

The free options that actually work for meeting people

Run clubs. Most neighborhoods have at least one free weekly run, and many end at a coffee shop or bar where people stick around. You see the same faces every week, which is what turns strangers into people you actually talk to.

Parks and library events. NYC Parks lists free outdoor events across all five boroughs — fitness classes, walking tours, concerts — and the public libraries run free talks, workshops and book clubs. None are singles events, but they draw people who like showing up to things, and the activity gives you something to talk about.

Free museum hours. Several museums have free or pay-what-you-wish evenings. Times change, so check the museum’s own site before you go. A gallery is one of the easiest places in the city to start a conversation: you’re both looking at the same thing.

App-hosted singles nights. Some dating apps now run in-person events for their members. Ours are Nonna Nights: RSVP is free for members, and everyone in the room has taken the same compatibility quiz, so the app shows you who there you actually match with — and by how much. See what’s coming up.

How to tell a free event from a bait-and-switch

Before you RSVP, check three things:

  • Free admission or free RSVP? Some listings are free to reserve and charge at the door.
  • Is there a drink minimum? A bar can host a “free” event and still require a purchase.
  • Do you pay to see your matches? Some events are free to attend and charge afterward to find out who liked you. Nonna Nights don’t: seeing your top compatibility scores after the event costs nothing.

Going alone (most people do)

Free events are easier to go to solo because there’s nothing to lose if it’s not your crowd. The usual rules apply: public venue, a friend who knows where you are, your own way home. At Nonna Nights there’s always a host on site, and anyone you’ve blocked in the app is kept away from events you attend. More in our first-date safety plan.

Make a free night count

The weakness of most free events is that you have no idea who in the room is single, or who you’d get along with. That’s the gap a compatibility quiz closes. Take it before you go and you arrive knowing who to talk to instead of guessing.
