First date ideas in NYC that aren’t just drinks

By Nomi Ali Tariq, Founder ·

What is a good first date in NYC?

A good first date in New York is short, public and easy to talk through. Pick somewhere busy, with something to look at so the conversation never stalls, and an easy way to extend it — or end it politely. Here are the ones that work.

Walks

  • The High Line — busy, scenic, and you can step off at any exit.
  • Brooklyn Bridge — go in daylight, end in DUMBO for coffee.
  • Central Park — pick a loop, not the whole park.

Coffee plus one thing

Coffee alone can feel like an interview. Coffee plus a bookstore, a gallery or a record shop gives you something to react to together, and the browsing does half the talking.

Markets and food halls

A food hall or a seasonal market lets you share a few small plates without committing to a long dinner. Seasonal markets change by month, so check before you go.

Museums

A museum is one of the easiest first dates there is: you’re both looking at the same thing, and it’s always public. Several have free or pay-what-you-wish hours; check the museum’s own site for current times.

Something small and different

The Roosevelt Island Tram costs a subway fare and has one of the best views in the city. Fun, short, and easy to follow with a walk.

Keep it safe and easy

  • Meet there, and get home on your own.
  • Tell a friend where you’ll be.
  • Plan about an hour, with an easy way to extend it.
