Yes. Nonna Picks is a real dating app, built by a small team in New York, and the safety features are the same ones we’d want for our own friends and family: selfie verification with a visible badge, matching by compatibility rather than by who is most active, messaging that stays in-app and only opens after a mutual match, one-tap block and report with human moderators reading every report, data that is encrypted and never sold, and events in public venues with hosts present. Verification: a live selfie and a badge

Every member can verify with a live selfie, and verified profiles show a badge. The purpose is simple: to confirm that a real person is behind the profile and that they look like their photos. Verification is a signal, not a guarantee of character — no app can promise that — but it removes the most common form of deception on dating apps, and the badge lets you decide to only engage with people who’ve done it.

Matching: by fit, not by whoever’s online

This is the part that makes Nonna Picks feel different day to day. Every member answers a 99-question compatibility quiz across seven dimensions — values, life vision, family, money, lifestyle, emotional connection, and growth. The app scores you against every other member and surfaces your highest-fit matches first, with the per-dimension scores visible on each profile, so you know why you match before you say hello. You can stop after the first part of the quiz and your matches already work; the later parts make the scores more accurate.

Why this is a safety feature and not just a matching feature: because ranking is by compatibility, the people you see aren’t the people who swipe the most or pay the most. You can skip anyone with no penalty. Nonna — the matchmaker persona the app is named for — is meant to feel like the grandmother who introduces you to someone she’s actually thought about, not a feed that shows you everyone. Messaging: in-app, after a mutual match

Conversations open once two people have both said yes. Until then, no one can message you. That one rule changes the experience more than any other: your inbox holds the conversations you chose, not a queue of strangers. Messaging happens inside the app. We recommend keeping it there until you’re comfortable — partly so you never have to hand out your number to find out if someone is worth talking to, and partly because an in-app record is what our team can act on if something goes wrong. Block and report: one tap, read by a human

From any profile or chat, the menu gives you Block and Report. Blocking is instant and works both ways — they can’t see you or contact you, and you won’t see them. Reports are confidential, and every one is reviewed by a human moderator rather than an automated form letter, with urgent cases (threats, violence, anyone who seems underage) prioritized. We warn, suspend, or permanently remove accounts that break our guidelines, and if you matched with someone we later remove, we’ll tell you. Blocking also carries over to real life: anyone you’ve blocked is kept away from events you attend, and removed members can’t attend at all. Your data: encrypted, never sold, yours to delete

A dating profile is sensitive by nature, so the policy is short. Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We never sell it. You can export or delete your account — and everything in it — any time from settings, or by emailing hello@nonnapicks.com. Deletion means deletion, not “deactivate and we’ll keep it.” If you ever want to leave, we’d rather make it easy and earn you back than make it hard.

Events: public venues, hosts on the floor

Our in-person events — the Nonna Nights series and the other small singles evenings we host — are held in public venues, and hosts are there the whole time. If you feel uncomfortable or need anything, you find the host. The format is a normal social evening, not speed dating: you RSVP in the app, arrive, and the app shows you a private list of the people in the room you’re compatible with. Your list is yours alone, so no one is put on the spot, and you can come solo or bring a single friend. We also work to keep events balanced — as an event fills up, RSVPs on the over-represented side may pause so the ratio stays even. The same rules apply in person as online: arrange your own way home, tell someone your plans, and harassment of any kind gets a person removed from the event and the platform. What we deliberately don’t do

• No hookup framing. Nonna Picks is for people who want a relationship. You won’t find “tonight” or “no strings” anywhere in our copy, and if we ever slip, tell us.
• No pay-to-outrank. Paid plans include a short visibility boost, the same kind every app sells, but nobody can pay to appear above a better match in your list. Ranking is by compatibility, full stop.
• No gates by background. Nonna Picks is inclusive by default — every gender, orientation, religion, culture, and nationality. Those things are optional filters you control, never defaults or requirements.
• No selling your data. Covered above, but it belongs on this list.

The honest caveats

We’re in early access. The member base is growing, and in New York it is still far smaller than the apps that have been around for a decade, so your short list will be short for a while. Events run most often in NYC; other cities have matching now with events rolling out as their member bases grow. Native iPhone and Android apps are on the way — for now Nonna Picks runs in your browser and installs to your home screen. And being free during early access is a founding-member benefit, not a promise that everything stays free forever: founding members keep premium features free for life, and when billing launches, later members will see paid tiers. None of that changes the safety features above, which are not paid features and never will be.
